This is a time when we’re all aware of what matters most.

After the events of Holy Week, the disciples are devastated. They are in the midst of full-blown grief and disbelief. Into the heart of that grief came a stunning revelation–life had overcome death. God’s faithfulness would build them up once again–will bind them together. Is this possible in our lives? This series’ worship will say, “Yes, it can! Come and see! Live and love! This is the heart of the matter!”

Originally designed at the very genesis of the Covid-19 pandemic, this series highlighted the Acts scriptures that describe the early Christian community’s worship in the temple and around their tables at home.

In this season of continuing uncertainty and unrest, this series offers a way to engage people, affirming the support we give one another in hard times. Because it was originally conceived for people to gather around their tables during the at-home lock-down in 2020, this series is now adapted for use around tables in the sanctuary if you have flexible seating, or in the fellowship hall, or outside. It draws on the wisdom of the “dinner church” movement that reminds us that worship can happen in many ways. This could be a fun Easter Season or summer alternative, or used in small at-home dinner groups. Adapt for whatever context works best for your community!

About this series theme

The butterfly has long been a symbol of the resurrection of Jesus, as well as our own resurrection as we emerge from the power of fear and death. In this series, we will consider the process of metamorphosis as a guide to examine our own transformations from cocoons and tombs to the unfurled beauty of all God calls us to be. This series can be used as an Easter Season series OR any time of year you need to focus on new life!

Butterflies are a timeless and powerful symbol of metamorphosis, change, growth, and renewal. Caterpillars spin a cocoon around themselves and turn into a goo inside, breaking down completely so that they can reform and break out of their protective shells as a new creation! This visual metaphor is rich with possibility for drawing parallels to the life of your church and community members. The most hopeful analogy is that the caterpillar had DNA within it already just waiting for this moment. We too have all we need to move forward in a reimagined presence in this world!

About this series theme

This non-lectionary series is inspired by Amos, a prophet whose message is that God calls us to let "justice roll down like waters." Worship without justice is not acceptable, rather our songs must move us to action on behalf of the oppressed. Utilizes the music of WDS Guest Expert, Mark Miller. Originally designed for Lent, this version of the series can be adapted for anytime.

Why this series?

This series was originally designed for the Lenten season. This version you are viewing is the “anytime” version of the series with Lent mentions edited out because we found that this powerful journey works any time of year! The focus on baptism and justice is the same.

In this adaptation, Dr. McFee created two versions of what was originally a culminating Easter service. You could choose to begin this series on Easter Sunday or the Sunday after Easter, or you could adapt the materials for use at anytime of the year. The messages in this series are powerful and will make an impact on your congregation whenever you choose to use it, not just during the Lent or Easter seasons.

Marcia McFee and Mark Miller have created worship in many settings together over many years, weaving their belief in the power of worshiping together as a catalyst for moving hearts, mind and bodies into greater empowerment for good. "Last year, Mark teamed up with the General Commission on Religion and Race to offer a Lenten study that would invite congregations into conversations about reconciliation with neighbors near and far. I was inspired by this format and decided to create worship to accompany the study this year. We are also expanding that study in many directions so that you can pick and choose among a variety of resources for your small groups that will allow you to enter the conversation at different levels of engagement. Many churches have been talking about justice issues for a long time and will appreciate the deeper dive into more challenging topics. Other congregations will be at a more 'entry' level and will find resources for incremental steps to greater awareness. These are the earliest series I created before I began to create fully-scripted worship series. They have lots of ideas for every Sunday, every worship art (too many to use, FYI) but you are tasked with creating your own scripts/orders of worship. These are available only to paid annual subscribers, not a la carte. Go HERE to subscribe if you’d like to add these resources to your access!

Rise Up! (RCL Year A — 7 Weeks) - This lectionary-based (Year A) Easter Season series takes on some of the “big deals” of the faith such as belief, suffering, sacrifice, judgment. Could be adapted for any time of year.

A Place to Call Home (RCL Year B — 8 Weeks) - This lectionary-based (Year B) Easter Season series begins on Easter with an invitation to everyone, but especially visitors, to consider exploring just for the next 7 weeks what it would be like to reconsider the church as “a place to call home” and all that entails. Please note: this series will be adapted into a fully-scripted series for 2027.

Draw the Circle Wide (NL Year 2 — 8 Weeks) - This series was originally created for the Easter season utilizing the scriptures from the Narrative Lectionary, Year 1. Focuses on expanding love, grace, reconciliation in the world using the early church expansion of Christianity to Gentiles. Can be adapted for other times of year.

Just As He Told You (NL Year 2 — 8 Weeks) - This Easter Season series could be subtitled "When in Doubt, Read the Instructions!" The texts pair advice from Jesus with the struggles of the early church and invite us to apply it all to our own discipleship. Based on the Narrative Lectionary, Year 2, but could be used even if you don't follow that lectionary.
