Seasonal Affective Disorder happens when a lack of sunlight affects our moods and ability to cope effectively. “Spiritual” Affective Disorder can also be a condition when we’ve had prolonged stress and life is disturbingly uncertain. What is our faithful response to our strained mental health? What if everyday life activities could become spiritual practices — deepening our experience of a meaningful life and helping us shine a light on the “blahs?”

Why This Series Now?

The impact of the last few years is undeniable: research shows that we are more stressed than ever. Mental health has become the new epidemic and it is time that we talk about it in ways that de-stigmatize and humanize what so many are going through. What is our faithful response? What we know is that "practices" (things done with regularity and intentionality) can be avenues for wellbeing. Rather than focus on traditional religious practices, this series focuses on the scriptural connections to ordinary, everyday practices that are good for mind, body, and spirit and translates them into ways to heal "Spiritual Affective Disorder." This take-off on SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) that affects people especially in the winter months will help us embrace a kinder, gentler new year resolution practice.

About this series theme

After the rush and activity of the holiday season, the new year can offer us a time of slowing down, simplifying, and leaning on reflection and prayer to help us sustain the journey toward a time when we can move to the rhythms of life for which we yearn. It is difficult to be patient in the midst of difficult times. The Psalms can help us with that.

For this series, we have used a new translation resource from the Order of St. Luke, a religious order rooted in the Wesleyan tradition dedicated to sacramental and liturgical scholarship, education, and practice. Their 2020 publication of A Lukan Psalter according to the usage of The Order of Saint Luke utilizes primarily The Inclusive Bible but also some adaptations of their own to provide poetic and lyrical versions of the Psalms. If you want to learn an ancient practice still in use today, this volume (sold separately) includes instructions and notations for chanting some of the Psalms. Here is a brief look at the Psalms in this series:

About this series theme

The message of this series is clear: having been made in the Creator’s image, we are all creative. But creativity happens in many forms. Many people have been told that creativity only comes in the form of being “artistic.” But we create in the everyday things we do in our work and play. No matter how our creativity comes forth, when we are aligned with these gifts and connected to the things that excite us, we contribute in making the world a better place. This uplifting experience of worship will encourage folks to nurture their inherent creativity and recognize this not only as a faithful act, but as an essential quality of being human and being a co-creator of goodness with God!

These are the earliest series I created before I began to create fully-scripted worship series. They have lots of ideas for every Sunday, every worship art (too many to use, FYI) but you are tasked with creating your own scripts/orders of worship. These are available only to paid annual subscribers, not a la carte. Go HERE to subscribe if you’d like to add these resources to your access!

Who Are You? (RCL Year A — 9 Weeks) - This Epiphany Plus series utilizes Lectionary Year A readings to guide the congregation in a journey of answering the question, “Who Are You?” (can you hear The Who singing?) What kind of transformation can happen in 9 weeks of living into our God-given identity, intention and integrity?

Known and Called (RCL Year B — 8 Weeks) - This lectionary-based (Year B) Epiphany Plus series explores scriptures that describe people finding out about this man, Jesus, and asks how we are recognized and known as his followers.

For Sake of Life (RCL Year C — 6 Weeks) - This lectionary-based (Year C) Epiphany Plus series has a justice focus as the congregation journeys through stories of Jesus’ ministry and mission and applies them to their own passion and commitment.

Discipleship by the Sea (Non-Lectinoary — 9 Weeks) This non-lectionary series originally designed for Epiphany Plus can be adapted for any time of year for any length. It follows Jesus at the shoreline through the book of Mark from the calling of the disciples to the post-resurrection appearance there.

The Passionate Jesus (Non-Lectionary — 6 Weeks) - This non-lectionary series is based on a book by the same name by The Rev. Peter Wallace about what the emotions of Jesus can teach us about our own emotional/spiritual health. The series could be accompanied by a book study through the season, utilizing the questions at the end of each chapter.

Wholly Human, Holy Divine (NL Year 1 — 6 Weeks) - This Epiphany series based on the Narrative Lectionary, Year 1, explores the belief in Jesus as fully human and fully divine and our own call to live into this fullness as children of God.

Ricky Business (NL Year 2 — 6 Weeks) - This series, originally designed for Epiphany Plus (Narrative Lectionary, Year 2), can be used anytime you want to emphasize how Jesus calls us to take risks on behalf of love and justice. Scriptures show Jesus rubbing rulers the wrong way, eating with "sinners" and putting himself amidst the sick and unclean.
