Reflecting the Sacred

The Christmas season is time when the juxtaposition of the sacred and secular feels sometimes blatantly opposed, and sometimes quite blurred. The word “sacred” points to something dedicated as “holy” and “set apart.” This year, you are invited to a spiritual journey of seeing ALL things pregnant with the Holy. What could your experience of the Advent and Christmas season be like if we lived it imagining that everything is reflecting the sacred?

This fully-scripted Advent/Christmas series follows the scriptures for RCL Year A and draws inspiration from The Universal Christ by Richard Rohr and the companion devotional book, Every Thing Is Sacred: 40 Practices and Reflections on the Universal Christ, compiled by Patrick Boland.

The Gift of Being Present

gathering the lambs and holding them close,
and leading mother ewes with gentleness.”

Advent can be filled with worry about finding the perfect Christmas gifts. Deep down we want people in our lives to know they are special and that we love them. But sometimes we overlook the greatest gift of all… our very presence. Our spiritual ancestors were also worried — often about survival in the midst of political occupation. And the response of the scriptures is “the Holy Living One is with you.” Like a shepherd who never leaves the flock, we are held close. This season, we are invited to be the gift of presence for our loved ones, for our communities, for those who need it most.

As the series trailer says, “beyond the wrappings and bows lies an emptiness, a loneliness.” The statistics on despair right now are sobering, much less the personal experience you or your loved ones may have with this “phenomenon” we are experiencing. And so I decided to practice what I teach — one of the best ways to address a topic in community is through our community worship. This is because when we talk out loud about it, when we realize we are not alone, and when we search for the intersections of our faith narrative, transformation is possible. And then the fast-track to transformation is “practice.” We put our actions into play outside of worship, inspired by what we have experienced in worship. So this season we will be more “present” in order to work to dispel loneliness, emptiness, and despair. We will discover that our own presence is a present to others — and this is better than any gift money can buy.

What Child IS This? Beyond the Lullaby

In 1865, William Chatterton Dix penned a poem that would become the beloved Christmas-time favorite, “What Child Is This?” During Advent, we will dive into this question that is much more complicated than the lilting lullaby tune, “Greensleeves,” conveys. We will see the story of the time leading up to the birth of Christ in its historical trauma-informed fullness. The story of humanity and its recurring themes of oppression and corruption run right through history and into our own narratives. Yet, we can rely on the assurance of the carol to confirm that God is “present with us” in powerful ways that continue to be the Word of Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love even and especially in the midst of hard times.

I Believe Even When...

At certain times in history, sorrow has threatened to drown out the music and snuff out the light. Such was the time when this series was created (2020). And so we wondered…

…what if? Instead of turning away from this moment in sorrow, we embrace it and turn our attention toward the stories of the indelible human spirit that has always been accompanied by the power of music to illuminate the dark night? What if we found other ways–unforgettable ways– to fill the void left by our loss? To “fill the night with music and light?” What if we gain more insight about the significance of the birth of Jesus, the life that was the “light” for the people?

This worship series brought a powerful message of hope in a time of pandemic terror. But we still suffer at times from despair. Reworked to apply to any time, let this series and its stories about the power of music bolster hope in your congregation.

Theme Anthem

The theme anthem and title of this series, “I Believe,” is a beloved musical arrangement by Mark A. Miller of an anonymous Jewish poem found scrawled on a wall during the Holocaust. We believe that we are called to examine humanity’s history of pain accompanied by fear that leads to oppression and violence of one people against another. This is the world into which Jesus was born, and through which his teachings would challenge and call for a new way of being in relationship with each other. This Advent and Christmas, let us fill the night with music and light and affirm and act on the reasons why we can still “believe, even when” we are discouraged.

On The Way to Bethlehem

We are so often focused on the destination in our travels. “Where are you going?” is the most common question upon hearing that someone is heading out of town. While the destination is perhaps the impetus for deciding to “go”, it is often the journey itself that offers the most memorable moments-frustrating or delightful. This Advent season, we will pay attention not just to the destination of Christmas, but to the places where events occurred that led to a starry night on which a child was born who would change the world. And we will ponder our own milestones-the progress and the potholes “on the way.”

Angels Among Us

The angels that appear in the story of Jesus’ birth would have been very comfortable in our world of tweets and hashtags. Their messages were often short and to the point–their favorite line being: #DoNotBeAfraid. This Advent, we will join with the angels in offering this world messages of

#morelove
...and ultimately #morelife.

I believe we are called to be messengers of Good News. The stories of the angel visits to Zechariah, Mary, Joseph and the shepherds at Jesus’ birth will offer us inspiration to incorporate less fear and more goodness into our own lives and therefore, in the lives of all we touch. I think there will be some profound opportunities in this series to deal with our own propensity for fear, get some perspective, and be empowered for new life in the new year.”

Calm and Bright

All is calm. All is bright.

“Silent Night” has become the best-loved worship moment of many Christians–even those who only come to church once a year. Something mystical occurs as we light our candles and sing the hope of “all is calm, all is bright”–peace and light for the world. Originally written during the 200th anniversary of the song’s debut in 2018, this worship series celebrates the carol’s message over the entire season of Advent and highlights its call for our lives that can guide us all year long.

Why This Series?

The classic hymn, “Silent Night,” first made its debut more than 200 years ago on Christmas Eve, 1818 at the St. Nicholas chapel in Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. The melody by composer Franz Gruber is instantly recognizable from the first few notes, and the original text by Joseph Mohr has been translated from the original German into over 140 languages. In 1914, just four years shy of the 100th anniversary of “Silent Night,” the soldiers fighting World War I along the Western Front held a ceasefire in some areas out of mutual respect for the holiday. Members from opposing sides exchanged gifts and stories with one another, played games, and sang Christmas carols together, including the beloved hymn “Silent Night.” Today, churches all over the world gather together each year on Christmas Eve to join hands, light candles, sing “Silent Night,” and participate in a timeless tradition of inimitable ritual power.

Our communities, our churches, and our world are torn and divided about many issues of cultural contention. Families fight, politicians argue, flame wars spread ignorance and hate on the internet, and sometimes we feel that hope, peace, love, and light are missing from our lives. It is our sincere prayer that this Christmas will be a time of ceasefire from our own sources of conflict. This year, we will raise our voices in song to celebrate the birth of Christ with spirits of peace and love that transcends all barriers.

Heaven and Nature Sing

“Joy to the World,” a beloved Christmas classic,
has been celebrated and sung for 300 years.

Hymn writer Isaac Watt’s interpretation of Psalm 98 invites us to sing a “new song”–and it is a powerful cosmic performance of all creation being renewed and freed. Rather than “joy” being yet another word for “happiness,” we will discover that the depths of joy can be found especially in the midst of suffering, the work of justice, and the presence of compassion–all part of the coming of Jesus to this world and a message the world still so desperately needs.

This Advent/Christmas series will take a look at how living in God’s economy of grace and justice is the antithesis of the life-threatening addiction to money, success, exclusion and looking out for ourselves. The chimes of the clock-tower bells in Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol provide a wake-up call for Ebenezer Scrooge and turn him from his resentment, fear and isolation. Just as God’s presence was born
anew into this world, we too can be born anew, woken up and redeemed into renewed life, joy, passion, generosity, humility and love.
